What can I do?
Cutting emissions by 10% is a challenging task. This is why we must address the issue on both the college and the individual level. We have a 10:10 task force in place for dealing with the college level, but we also need YOUR help. The simplest way for you to tackle your 10% cut is to sign up for the 10:10 pledges, downloadable here, and make them part of your daily routine. These pledges help you live a life with a greener carbon footprint by saving energy on electric appliances, laundry, lighting and heating.
However, there are plenty more options which are not officially part of the 10:10 campaign, which would enormously help improve the environment if you followed them:
1) Fly less - swap plane for train, holiday nearer to home and take fewer but longer trips - this can result in dramatically less climate change emissions.
2) Drive less - walk or cycle rather than take public transport or drive in your car.
3) Eat better - eat local fruits and vegetables which are in season rather than imported foods from distant countries.
4) Buy good stuff - buy high-quality things that last, repair broken stuff rather than chucking it, avoid excess packaging.
5) Don't waste food - the average British family throws away £50 worth of food every month. So don't buy or cook more than you need and eat those leftovers with a smile on your face.
6) Save water - take showers rather than baths, only run full dishwashers and washing machines.
7) Feel happier - you're healthier for walking and cycling, you've made new friends from swapping stuff, you've saved a big chunk of cash and you know you're part of the global effort to prevent catastrophic climate change.
