Leaving a bequest (legacy) is a wonderful way to support the College. No matter how large or small, all legacy gifts are invaluable in helping to ensure we can provide future generations with the unique experience of being part of Goodenough College.
You can choose to remember the College generally in your will: unrestricted legacy gifts enable us to allocate funds where they will be needed most. Your bequest will help future generations meet the requirements of their time.
Alternatively, you might wish to direct your legacy towards a specific purpose such as establishing a bursary or contributing to a building project. Priorities do change over time and so we recommend that you contact Hannah Du Grey Director of Development and External Relations, to discuss your preferences. We want to work with you to make sure we can carry out your wishes effectively.
There are many ways in which you can include Goodenough College in your will. We can provide some suggested wording for you however we strongly advise you to seek professional advice in your own country as tax and estate legislation varies.
In many countries, including the UK, Canada and USA, there are tax benefits available to those making bequests to the College. Canadian residents can direct their bequests through the London Goodenough Association of Canada; US residents can similarly direct their legacy gifts through the Friends of Goodenough College Inc. Your professional advisor is best placed to advise you on the most effective way to structure your gift.
We fully appreciate that not everyone wants to tell us about their intention to leave a legacy to the College. However, if you do inform us, it will help us plan for the future and we will treat this information in absolute confidence and respect.
Hilary Carter (LH 96-97) explains why she is leaving a legacy to the College:
Goodenough College is one of the most important beneficiaries in my and my husband’s will. My experience at Goodenough had a profound impact on my life. Life in and around London House was special indeed. I met some of the finest people I will ever know, and crammed a lifetime of living into 12 short, unforgettable months.
Now my hopes and dreams are for our two children that they too will have the opportunity to study overseas and experience London in a way that is otherwise impossible outside Goodenough College, and to become better people for it.
Our gift to Goodenough College represents our hopes and dreams for the future of the College and the role it will continue to play in the lives of so many young people. I encourage each and every one of you to join us in making your own planned gift to Goodenough College.
