Julius Ocen
Julius comes from a rural area in a war-ravaged region of Uganda. Thanks to the 2023 Goodenough Windle Scholarship and his drive to succeed he is living in College and studying for an MA in Education, Gender and International Development at University College London
I am incredibly honoured to have been chosen as a recipient of the prestigious 2023 Goodenough-Windle Scholarship at the College. This scholarship represents an unparalleled opportunity, one that extends far beyond the confines of academia, shaping my future in profound ways. It allows me to experience life in the vibrant heart of London, become an integral part of the close-knit Goodenough College community, and pursue my master’s degree in Education, Gender, and International Development at the renowned University College London.
My aspirations are not limited to personal academic achievements. I envision a future where I can act as a catalyst for change, moulding the minds of the next generation as an academic. Through teaching, mentorship, and groundbreaking research, I aim to push the boundaries of my field, and I am committed to collaborating with influential policymakers, both within and outside the government, to champion innovative policies and solutions. My focus will be on bridging critical gaps in service delivery, particularly in emergency contexts within low and developing countries.
My journey begins in the modest rural district of Lira, now known as Amolatar, nestled within the war-ravaged Northern region of Uganda. Here, limited access to education is the harsh reality, with fewer than four university graduates. As the first member of my family to attain a university degree, my path has been marked by unwavering determination. My parents, who lacked a formal education, worked tirelessly, often struggling to provide the basic necessities. At the young age of ten, I began working to ease the financial burden on my family by fetching water for local construction sites.
Throughout my academic journey, I have consistently maintained an impressive grade point average, a testament to my dedication to academic excellence. I have actively engaged in numerous extracurricular activities, including community service and volunteer work, earning recognition for both academic achievement and exceptional contributions to my community.
The support I’ve received through my Scholarship has lifted a significant financial burden, and I am now able to focus on my studies without worrying about the cost of accommodation and other expenses.
I extend my deepest gratitude to the generous donors at the College whose unwavering support has paved the way for this extraordinary journey. Your encouragement has ignited a spark within me, and I am wholeheartedly committed to achieving academic excellence. Your investment in my education goes beyond a financial contribution; it is an investment in a future brimming with boundless potential.
