Food and drink at Goodenough College

Goodenough College offers a full catering service every day of the year.

What we offer

Our caterer Holroyd Howe specialises in providing freshly prepared, nutritious food and takes pride in offering great hospitality.  Meals are available either on an ad-hoc basis or by signing up to our great value Meal Plans. All Members’ meals are subsidised by the College.

Hospitality and conviviality are key elements of the College experience and each term the College holds a variety of dining events where every Member is invited to dine for free.  If you prefer to cook your own meals there are kitchen facilities available.

Freddie's is the College’s on-site coffee shop and restaurant.  At lunchtime, Freddie’s serves at least three hot meal options and offers a deli sandwich bar, salad bar, soup and jacket potatoes. Hot drinks, snacks and sandwiches are available through the day. In the evening Freddie’s turns into a cosy bar, serving drinks and snacks.

Dinner is held in the Great Hall most evenings, offering Members a three-course meal, which includes a choice of main courses, a pasta and salad bar and a range of desserts. We also hold regular Dining-In Nights where the College provides a themed meal for Members to enjoy for free.

Freddies Café & Bar

Freddie's Café & Bar

Freddie’s is an ideal place to relax with a drink and something to eat. Members can watch Sky TV, including Sky Sports, and enjoy a great selection of beers. It’s also a place where we regularly run themed events and special promotions, often tied into sporting events.

Freddie’s is open Monday to Friday 10.00 – 22.30 and Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays 10.00 – 22.30
(NB: alcohol can be purchased from 10am onwards).

The College also has a Member-run bar called G-Bar (which includes a table tennis table and sport subscription TV). G-Bar is open Wednesday to Saturday 20.00 – 23.00 and Sunday 20.00 – 22.30 and is a great place to come to unwind and socialise with friends.

Self catering at Goodenough

All Members have access to self-catered facilities should they wish to cook for themselves.

All flats and studios include a kitchen equipped with cutlery, crockery and pots and pans and all single study-bedrooms have a full-sized fridge. There are also pantries with sinks and microwaves, and there are larger kitchens (known as butteries) which offer toasters, microwaves, ovens, hobs, sinks and seating areas where Members can cook and gather with friends to eat. Members can also have a locker within the buttery.

The College is within walking distance of several supermarkets and convenience stores. There is a large Waitrose and Sainsbury’s in the nearby Brunswick Centre and a 24-hour Tesco by Russell Square Underground Station, all just five-minutes walk away

Dining events

Each term the College holds dining events to give everyone the opportunity to experience dining in the historical Great Hall.  It’s a chance to bring together old friends, and meet new ones, whilst enjoying a delicious dinner.

Dining-In Nights are fun, free informal evenings, often themed to tie in with Cultural Weeks. Our chefs design a topical menu for Members to enjoy, the Great Hall is often decorated and entertainment provided.

Each year the College hosts five Faculty Dinners, which bring together Members according to the discipline they study; either Medical and Natural Sciences, Arts, Economics and Business, Politics or Law.  Each drinks reception and black-tie dinner gives Members the opportunity to dine free with leading academics, MPs, representatives from the City of London and key industry leaders and hear from prestigious speakers, with expertise relevant to the field of study.

In addition to these free dining events, each Term the College organises Collegiate Suppers, candlelit occasions with a particular theme, open to a set number of Members.
