Studying at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM)
The Academy provides undergraduate and postgraduate training across instrumental performance, composition, jazz, musical theatre and opera, and recruits musicians from around the world, with a student community representing more than 50 nationalities. Teaching is carried out by 299 teachers and professors.
In 1999 the Academy became the only music conservatoire to be admitted as a full member of the University of London (UoL), which has more than 120,000 students in London. The RAM teaches about 1,000 students and International students make up about 50% of the total student population.
Although RAM has no student halls of residence of its own it does have rooms allocated to it, by the University of London (UoL), in the following halls:
- College Hall, Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HZ.
- International Hall, Lansdowne Terrace London WC1N 1AS .
- Lillian Penson Hall, 15 – 25 Talbot Square, London, W2 1TT.
- The Garden Halls, 1 Cartwright Gardens, Kings Cross, London, WC1H 9EN, UK.
Most of the Academy’s allocated places are in Lillian Penson Hall, which is right next to Paddington Station.
As well as the options offered by RAM, Goodenough College is a popular choice for postgraduates who appreciate the cameraderie and amenities on offer when living in a hall. Goodenough College provides a friendly “home from home” for postgraduate students from all around the world; giving its student Members a cost-effective central London base, opportunities to take part in a huge range of social, and intellectual events and the chance to make friends and contacts from around the globe.
Goodenough is an educational charity dedicated to bringing together some of the world’s brightest minds in one community. To achieve that goal it offers a number of Scholarships to help talented students from less privileged backgrounds to afford to live at the College. Students who have lived at Goodenough see themselves as part of a special community, which is why the College has such a thriving international Alumni community.
How to get to RAM from Goodenough College
Travelling to and from RAM’s campus to Goodenough College is easy and quick. It is only 2.8km away, it can be walked in 42 minutes or cycled in 14 minutes. King’s Cross St. Pancras is only an 18 minute walk away.
The Academy’s campus and current facilities are situated on Marylebone Road in central London, adjacent to Regent’s Park.
