When you arrive

Arriving in a city as big as London for the first time can be overwhelming. That's why, as a new Member of Goodenough College, you will be invited to our Welcome Period programme, offering a range of events and activities to help you make connections, settle in, and feel at home.

Our Welcome Period for new College Members takes place in the last two weeks of September. The programme includes meeting the Dean and Registrar through organised orientation sessions and tours along with multiple opportunities to meet other Members through various events.

Welcome drinks receptions

Throughout our Welcome Period you will have many opportunities to attend our welcome drinks receptions helping you to get to know other Members in a relaxed and fun setting.

Guided walks and tours

To help you start exploring London and get to know other Members, we provide a variety of guided tours and walks.

Guided tours to London’s major museums, galleries and institutions, typically include: British Museum, National Gallery, Science Museum, the Royal Academy, the V&A, the Royal Society, The Courtauld Institute of Art, the Supreme Court, or the Houses of Parliament.

Guided walks include prime locations such as Trafalgar Square, St Paul’s Cathedral, Regents Park and Tower Bridge.

Clubs and Societies Fair

The College encourages Members to exchange ideas and share their interests and talents. The Clubs and Societies Fair helps new Members to find out more about the Member-led activities in College. It’s also a great opportunity to join  Clubs and Societies.

Boat party

Our boat party on the River Thames is a great opportunity for new Members to get to know one another in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, whilst enjoying breathtaking views of the London skyline.

Music and Desserts event

New College Members also get invited to the unforgettable Music and Desserts event organised by Members. It’s a great opportunity to get to know our community of music postgraduates and enjoy an array of musical performances – from opera to jazz, piano or guitar music.

Founder’s Day

The Welcome Period formally concludes with Founders’ Day, a College tradition dating back to the 1930s, in which College Members and Fellows gather to remember and celebrate the vision and generosity of the College’s founders and benefactors. Featuring a live choir and a special ceremony, Founder’s Day is also an invaluable opportunity to network with the  College’s Fellows – distinguished and notable individuals in their fields of expertise – who join Members after the ceremony for a drinks reception in the Great Hall.
