Amazing impact from our COVID-19 Appeal
We were overwhelmed by the fantastic response to our Appeal earlier this year, raising funds to support many of our Members struggling financially as a result of COVID-19.
We received approximately 500 gifts from Alumni and friends of the College based around the world, from Australia to Switzerland to Singapore to Canada. Together, this incredible international effort raised around £90,000 (including Gift Aid) which has already made a significant impact on Members in desperate financial need. Thank you to all those who gave – we couldn’t have done it without you!
“Although I have a full scholarship from the Ecuadorian government to cover tuition fees, research costs and living expenses, my sponsor stopped sending money overseas when COVID-19 hit. As my scholarship does not allow me to study remotely, I was unable to leave the College. Unfortunately, we did not receive any living expenses for the second part of the academic year but through support from the College’s COVID-19 Member Support Fund, we were able to cover expenses until June 2020 when, finally, we received some scholarship funding. On behalf of my family, we want to say THANK YOU for your generous support. The College is already changing our lives and provides an opportunity to make change in our home countries when we eventually return.”
The Appeal actively helped our Members during a very difficult time. Around 400 Members remained onsite throughout the pandemic, miles from home and their loved ones. Through your generosity you have supported us in two key ways:
- Practically, gifts helped Members who lost part-time jobs, savings, and in some instances university scholarship funding. You helped Members afford their rent; cover basic living costs, including food and medication; and pay for vital study resources including laptops.
- Emotionally, donations funded external mental health provision to support Members who were particularly struggling – an amazing gift which will have an impact for years to come.
The commitment from friends and Alumni to helping our Members and the College at this difficult time proves how powerful we are when we come together as a community. We rely on philanthropic donations, especially at a time when the College is suffering significant financial strain as a result of the pandemic. As such, we were thrilled to see so many of you coming together to help Members. Thank you!
“When the current crisis plunged our national currency (and, consequently, all our savings with it)… the College showed us a way forward. We had saved for years to support ourselves but we were not expecting this world crisis….your support meant we received a support assistance grant until the end of the term, allowing us to breathe again”
