Fond farewell to Sir Roy Goode – an enthusiastic supporter of the College

We were saddened to learn of the death of Sir Roy Goode CBE KC FBA (1933-2026). Sir Roy was, by common consent, the pre-eminent commercial law scholar of his generation and a wonderful Goodenough College Fellow who engaged enthusiastically with the College over many years.

Sir Roy Goode

Sir Roy was the founder and first Director of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary, University of London and later, as Norton Rose Professor of English Law at Oxford and a Fellow of St John’s College, he influenced the modern study of commercial law in England and beyond.

As a Goodenough College Fellow he was revered by the College’s Members for his extraordinary legal expertise and held in great affection for his kindness and generosity. We will miss his exceptional contributions at seminars and colloquia where he helped shape the thinking of generations of College Members.
