Maintenance Technician (Electrical bias)

Goodenough College, based in Mecklenburgh Square, offers a vibrant and secure accommodation to approximately 700 international post-graduate students and their families. The College’s aim is to create a stimulating and inclusive residential environment through a well planned programme of lectures, dinners, concerts and social activities.

We are now looking for a proactive Maintenance Technician with an electrical background to play a vital role in ensuring the smooth running, safety, and integrity of our historic, multi-building estate. Reporting to the Senior Maintenance Engineer, you’ll deliver day-to-day planned and reactive maintenance, as well as contribute to small projects, all while upholding the highest standards of quality and safety.

This varied position requires not only electrical competence but a willingness to turn your hand to general plumbing, HVAC, and a range of mechanical and electrical services. While your core hours will be Monday to Friday, flexibility for occasional weekend, evening, and out-of-hours work is expected. You will also be included in the call out rota.

Key Responsibilities

• Carrying out routine, preventive, and reactive maintenance with a strong focus on electrical systems, ensuring compliance and safety are always prioritised
• Installing and renewing electrical infrastructure—lighting, power supplies, plant equipment, rewiring, and more—alongside fault finding and remedial works
• Undertaking cross-trade inspections and urgent repairs in washrooms, bedrooms, and communal/public areas to keep our estate safe, functional, and presentable
• Assisting with project delivery, working with contractors and colleagues to enable works, decommission power supplies, and ensure site safety
• Using hand and power tools, plant, and machinery safely and competently, maintaining and storing equipment in line with best practice
• Keeping meticulous records of all maintenance tasks, schedules, and logs
• Building positive working relationships with staff, members, and contractors; always representing the College professionally
• Championing site safety by conducting regular hazard spotting, reporting concerns, and ensuring areas are safe for all building users and visitors
• Supporting contractor management and reporting any behaviours that don’t align with College policy or standards
• Carrying out risk assessments and adhering to all Health & Safety protocols, including manual handling, working at height, fire safety, COSHH, lone working, PASMA, and more
• Committing to formal and on-the-job training to maintain or enhance your qualifications and expertise
• Acting as a first aider and building fire marshal

Person Specifications

Applicants should possess at least one of the following qualifications:

• 18th Edition qualification
• Level 2 or 3 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating
• Level 2 or 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrical Installation

Additionally, we’re also looking for:

• 3–5 years’ hands-on experience with commercial plumbing or electrical systems
• Previous experience in building maintenance, ideally within educational or institutional settings
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently
• Excellent communication skills for seamless teamwork and stakeholder engagement
• Good organisational skills and a proactive, self-motivated approach
• Physical fitness and agility for manual handling and working at heights—note, lift access is limited across our historic estate
