Studying at the Courtauld Institute of Art

The Courtauld Institute of Art is an independent college of the University of London.  As the world’s leading centre for the study of art and history of conservation, the Courtauld offers one under graduate course and seven postgraduate programmes.

With about 500 students, this small specialist centre welcomes over 200 new postgraduate students every year.  International students make up to 40% of the total student population.

Student accommodation

The Courtauld is currently located at Vernon Square. Accommodation allocations are determined primarily by distance and prior study in the UK, with international and first-year BA students given priority.  The Courtauld is able to house 64 students in Duchy House its own hall of residence, located on the Strand in central London. Additionally, a small number of rooms are available at the University of London Intercollegiate Halls, most of which are located in Bloomsbury, a ten-minute walk from Vernon Square.

Goodenough is an educational charity dedicated to bringing together some of the world’s brightest minds in one community.  To achieve that goal it offers a number of Scholarships to help talented students from less privileged backgrounds to afford to live at the College. Students who have lived at Goodenough see themselves as part of a special community, which is why the College has such a thriving international Alumni community.

The Courtauld is currently located at Vernon Square which is around 2km away from Goodenough College. The lively social and intellectual programmes of activities and scholarship opportunities, means that Goodenough College is an attractive place for postgraduates to live whilst studying at The Courtauld University.

There are multiple accommodation options for you. If you are looking to stay with your partner and you’re studying a postgraduate programme at The Courtauld, we have double rooms and large studio flats on offer. For those postgraduates with children, we have accommodation for families with our two-three-bedroom flats that are available to rent.

How to get to The Courtauld from Goodenough College

Your journey to and from The Courtauld Institute of Art to Goodenough College is straightforward. Being only 2km away, you can walk it within 30 minutes, or cycle it within 12 minutes. You can also use one of several local buses that can also drop you off nearby.

Campus location

The Courtauld is currently undergoing a transformation project which will make its world-class artworks, research and teaching accessible to more people. Teaching and public events are currently taking place at Vernon Square, London WC1X 9EW and other departments remain in its historic Somerset House building.

  • Vernon Square campus is in Penton Rise, WC1X 9EW. Its central location makes access easy, with King’s Cross St Pancreas and Euston being nearby
  • Somerset House is situated in Strand, WC2R 0RN and has easy transport links to Temple, Charing Cross, Embankment and Waterloo
