Tributes to His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
The death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday 9 April, has touched many in the Goodenough College community.
Her Majesty The Queen has been Patron of Goodenough College since 1953, enthusiastically supported by the Duke of Edinburgh who accompanied her on a number of visits to the College. Our Members, Governors, Fellows, staff and Alumni value the genuine interest that His Royal Highness took in the College’s progress. The Duke of Edinburgh will be remembered with great warmth and affection by all those who had the opportunity to meet him during his visits to Mecklenburgh Square.
As soon as the news of His Royal Highness’s death was made public, a Notice (see image below) was posted at the entrance of all Goodenough buildings and our flag was arrayed for mourning. Prayers were said in the College chapel on the evening of Friday, 9 April. Condolence books were opened: both a physical book available for Member and staff signature in the chapel and also an online book for Alumni, Governors and friends of the College.
Our new Director, Alice Walpole, submitted a letter of condolence to Her Majesty The Queen, expressing the community’s appreciation of HRH Prince Philip’s support for the College. And on Thursday, 15 April, we held in our Chapel a special service of prayer for the life of HRH Prince Philip, with participants from the College community both present and joining online.
Alumni, Members and staff are warmly invited to add their messages of condolence to the College’s online Tribute Page. These personal messages will be passed on to Her Majesty The Queen following this week’s period of mourning.
