Food and drink at Goodenough College

Goodenough's collegiate atmosphere is very special and, with plenty of opportunities for Members to dine together, we create a sense of belonging and community that is often missing at university.

What we offer

Our caterer Baxter Storey specialises in providing freshly prepared, nutritious food, using local and seasonal products, and takes pride in offering great hospitality.

Halal and vegetarian options are always available and other dietary requirements can be accommodated on request, subject to availability.

To encourage College Members to eat together the College provides substantial, high quality meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner at heavily subsidised prices. We are confident that you will want to eat regularly at the College’s catering facilities in The Great Hall and Freddie’s Café/Bar.

Hospitality and conviviality are key elements of the College experience and each term the College holds a variety of dining events where every Member is invited to dine for free.  If you prefer to cook your own meals there are kitchen facilities available.

Lunch

Freddie’s is the go-to spot at the College for a cosy and welcoming atmosphere and quality refreshments.

Throughout the day, it operates as a coffee shop serving freshly prepared barista-made drinks. We are proud to offer Julius Meinl coffee and teas, alongside a range of other beverages and delicious sweet treats. At midday, the space transforms into a lunch venue, offering a choice of hot meals, tasty pizzas, comforting soups, fresh salads, and sandwiches to suit every taste.

Dinner

Dinner at the College is a truly special experience, held most evenings in the stunning Great Hall. The menu includes themed options such as Taste of the World and classic favourites from The Main Course Market. Menus are chef-led and planned on a weekly basis, using seasonal ingredients to ensure freshness, variety, and value. With a strong focus on nutrition and sustainability, dishes are thoughtfully prepared to cater to a range of tastes and dietary needs. Vegetarian options are always available, alongside a choice of comforting soups and fresh salads served each evening.

In addition, the College hosts regular Dining-In Nights where Members can indulge in a themed meal, thoughtfully prepared and offered free of charge. Whether it's a casual dinner or a themed celebration, dining in the Great Hall is always a memorable occasion.

Relax with friends in Maeve's Bar

The College also has a friendly and informal Member-run bar called Maeve’s – it’s a great space to meet other Members and unwind at the end of the day. Maeve’s is open from 8pm to 11pm from Monday to Saturday and 8pm to 10.30pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Self catering at Goodenough

All Members have access to self-catered facilities should they wish to cook for themselves.

All flats and studios include a kitchen equipped with cutlery, crockery and pots and pans and all single study-bedrooms have a full-sized fridge. There are also pantries with sinks and microwaves, and there are larger kitchens (known as butteries) which offer toasters, microwaves, ovens, hobs, sinks and seating areas where Members can cook and gather with friends to eat. Members can also have a locker within the buttery.

The College is within walking distance of several supermarkets and convenience stores. There is a large Waitrose and Sainsbury’s in the nearby Brunswick Centre and Tesco Express by Russell Square Underground Station, all just five-minutes walk away.

Dining events

Each term the College holds dining events to give everyone the opportunity to experience dining in the historic Great Hall.  It’s a chance to bring together old friends, and meet new ones, whilst enjoying a delicious dinner.

Dining-In Nights are fun, free informal evenings, often themed to tie in with Cultural Weeks. Our chefs design a topical menu for Members to enjoy, the Great Hall is often decorated and entertainment provided.

Each year the College hosts five Faculty Dinners, which bring together Members according to the discipline they study: Medical and Natural Sciences; Arts and Humanities; Economics and Business; Political and Social Sciences; or Law.  Each drinks reception and black-tie dinner gives Members the opportunity to dine free with leading academics, MPs, representatives from the City of London and key industry leaders and hear from prestigious speakers, with expertise relevant to the field of study.
